As someone who deals with a racing mind, I am always thinking of the next thing. What do I have to do after this? Where do I need to be next? All of these thoughts constantly in motion. So you can imagine a mind like that during a global pandemic - a mess. Amidst all the fear the virus has caused, my brain has continued to make me believe I'm forgetting to be somewhere or doing something. This global health pandemic has been a very drastic change of pace. The usual go-go-go mental has been forced to slow down. No longer are we able to enjoy company of others and the beauties our world has to offer.
While the adjustment hasn't been the easiest to get used to - I have been finding peace in practicing being present and indulging in leisure. It has been a great opportunity for me to learn that it is alright to do things that don't root in purpose. "Girl -- grab that coloring book and go outside and enjoy the sun! It. Will. Be. Okay." So in the spirit of leisure, here are a few things that I have been enjoying during social distancing:
Social distancing is a physical exercise taken to reduce the spread of the virus. Just because you have to keep your physical distance doesn't mean you have to socially isolate from your loved ones. I have been using this time to check in with my loved ones more - getting on FaceTime, playing virtual games, and sending texts to check in with friends. This is a great time to reach out to people who you have not talked to in a while and catch up.
I think it is safe to say that this will be our new normal for the foreseeable future. Knowing that, I took the beginning of this time to transition my living space into a multi-functional space that feels light and productive. I basically purged my room -- all the way from a fresh coat of paint to forming the Pinterest boards to start redecorating my room. While this is a long-term project, it has been something to look forward and come back to any time I'm starting to feel stagnant and unmotivated in my space.
Those who know me, know two things are true: I am a VERY skilled binge-watcher and I have a never ending queue. In tandem, these prove to a great way to spend my time in isolation. I have finally been committed to working through my queue, promising to myself that I will not add anything new until I get rid of something on my list. "All American" (TV Show; Netflix) and "Little Fires Everywhere" (TV Show; Hulu) have been my latest watches and they definitely did not disappoint.
My binge skills are not exclusive to television. I have been working through my also never-ending list of books that I want to read. I got "The Wedding Party" (Jasmine Guillory) in free library box at a mall. I have zero expectations of the book but was quickly entertained through the story of the two main characters. Currently, I am reading "We're Going to Need More Wine" (Gabrielle Union). I have heard nothing but good reviews of the book and am excited to continue through it. Plus, let's be honest -- we stan Gabrielle Union in this household.
These are some of the things that I have been doing and I look forward to see how much more I can add to this list when all of this is over (hopefully soon!). Feel free to share some things that you are doing during this time! I'd love to add them to my list. I think it is most important to note that this is a global health issue. Remember the severity of what that means and cut yourself some slack! Do not feel bad for "not taking advantage" of the time you have. Whatever it is you decide / are able to do, it is important to be safe and practice social distancing. We have the ability to help flatten the curve of those affected and let Miss Rona know she has well over-stayed her welcome!
